Virtual Visits

Bring Chris Grabenstein into your school, classroom, or library

Chris loves making virtual visits via Skype, FaceTime, or Google Hangout (and even something called BlueJeans) to schools, classrooms, and library groups that have read Shine! or at least one of his solo books. (For 2019-2020, priority will be given to groups that have read or plan to read Shine!)

If you're a teacher or librarian and your class/school/library group has been reading something by Chris (or Chris and J.J.), just request a virtual visit, fill out the form, submit it, and our events coordinator Lindsey Kimery will get back to you. Lindsey is a school librarian herself and says:

"One of the best parts of my job as a school librarian is connecting kids with the authors they love. These memories last a lifetime. Over the past 16 years, I’ve hosted over 60 authors and helped numerous librarians organize and host successful author events. I am passionate about helping authors and schools work together to successfully impact the lives of readers."

Virtual Visits are FEE FREE as a way of saying thank you for reading Chris's books. Sessions typically last thirty minutes and work best when the students come prepared with questions and then step up to the laptop/camera to ask them.

BONUS: If you want to talk about Shine!, co-author J.J. Grabenstein will join Chris (if she is not in the recording studio).

If you are unable to get on Chris's calendar (slots fill up quickly), Lindsey can also provide you with a link to a FREE 32-minute video where Chris answers The Top Ten Questions he is typically asked during a Virtual Visit.

LIBRARY OLYMPIC GAMES!

Chris has also created another FREE video where he is the Lemoncello-esque "game show host" for some Library Olympics games that you can play in your library or classroom. Check out the video here and let the games begin.

WANT SIGNED BOOKS? Several schools and libraries that Chris visits virtually have asked about purchasing autographed books.  So, Chris has worked out an arrangement with his local Indie bookstore, Book Culture on Columbus. Chris can personalize and sign the books, Book Culture will ship them on to you.

In-Person Author Visits

School Visits

For the 2019-2020 school year, Chris & J.J. will be scheduling a very limited number of select in-person school visits to promote their first co-authored book Shine! (You can also contact your local bookseller to see if your school can be added to the official Random House Children's Book launch tour for Shine! in November and December of 2019.)

"SHINING TOGETHER"

School Visits

J.J. & Chris have put together a brand new, extremely interactive (and fun), in-person presentation to go along with Shine! Using their improvisational comedy skills and collaborative writing prompts, they talk about working together (and with their editor) to create Shine! They will then work with your students to collaborate on a brand new story, created right on the spot.

Designed for grades three through six, a typical session runs 45-60 minutes with time for questions. Chris and J.J. can do two assembly presentations per day plus a lunch with students and/or faculty and, of course, a book signing.

LIMITED AVAILABILITY

Chris and J.J. will only be visiting schools planning major events (such as a One Book/One School program) around Shine! If you are interested, please request an in-person visit, fill out the form, submit it, and our events coordinator Lindsey Kimery will get back to you.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Chris will waive his $2,500 per day honorarium for schools that purchase at least 100 copies of Shine! (Chris is happy to sign his other books as well as those co-authored with James Patterson but those books will not count against the 100 book minimum.) Schools also need to pay reasonable transportation and lodging. (Just for Chris; if J.J. is not in the recording studio and able to travel, she's a free bonus.)

Chris and J.J. encourage schools to work with their local bookstores whenever possible. Many offer discounts to schools when they order a large number of books. If that option is not available to you, Random House Children's Books also offers schools a discount on books purchased for an author visit.
